Why Empathy, Nerdiness, and Body Knowledge Matter Just as Much as Experience in Massage Therapy
I’m Monica Skalsky, Founder of Wrthit, and after more than 30 years as a massage therapist, I’ve learned something that might surprise you:
Years of experience matter—but they aren’t the only thing that makes someone an exceptional massage therapist.
I’ve met therapists who were newer to the profession and absolutely fascinated by the human body. They studied. They asked questions. They listened to their clients. They wanted to understand why something felt the way it did instead of simply repeating the same massage routine.
And I’ve met therapists with years behind the table who stopped being curious somewhere along the way.
Experience is incredibly valuable. I wouldn't trade my three decades of hands-on work for anything. But I believe the best therapists bring experience together with empathy, education, curiosity, intuition and a genuine desire to keep learning.
In other words, I like a massage therapist who's a little bit of a nerd.
And at Wrthit, that's exactly the kind of therapist I want on our team.
Empathy Is One of the Most Important Skills We Have
Massage is incredibly personal.
Someone is trusting you with their body. They may be stressed, hurting, exhausted or simply desperately in need of an hour where they don't have to take care of anyone else.
For our post-op clients, that vulnerability can be even greater.
They may be swollen, uncomfortable and emotional. Their body may look and feel completely different from what they're accustomed to. They may be wondering whether what they're experiencing is normal.
That's why technique alone has never been enough for me.
A great therapist listens.
They notice when you tense up. They adjust pressure. They pay attention to what you're saying—and sometimes what your body is saying when you aren't saying anything at all.
Whether you're receiving a relaxing massage or lymphatic drainage after cosmetic surgery, you should feel like the person working with you is actually present with you.
Yes, We're Body Nerds
I've always been fascinated by the human body.
Muscles. Fascia. Movement patterns. The lymphatic system. Scar tissue. Why one area hurts when the actual problem may be somewhere else entirely.
I want to know why.
And after more than 30 years, I still want to learn.
That's something I look for in every therapist who joins Wrthit.
Professional education gives a massage therapist their foundation. Hands-on experience teaches lessons no textbook ever could. Continuing education expands that knowledge even further.
But curiosity is what keeps all of it growing.
A therapist should never reach a point where they believe there is nothing left to learn about the human body.
There is always more to learn.
Experience Matters—But It's Only Part of the Picture
I want to be very clear about this because I don't believe in diminishing experience.
Experience matters.
Thirty-plus years of working with thousands of bodies has taught me things I couldn't possibly have understood during my first few years as a therapist.
But years alone aren't the entire story.
When I'm evaluating a therapist, I want to know:
Do you listen?
Are you curious?
Do you understand anatomy?
Can you adapt instead of following the same routine on every body?
Are you willing to say, "I don't know, but I'm going to learn"?
Do you continue your education?
And most importantly: do you care about the person on your table?
Those qualities matter whether you're giving someone their monthly massage or working with a woman during one of the most vulnerable periods of her recovery.
Regular Massage and Post-Op Lymphatic Drainage Require Different Skills
This distinction is important.
A great traditional massage and great post-operative lymphatic drainage are not the same treatment.
During a regular massage, your therapist may work with muscle tension, movement restrictions, stress and areas that simply need more attention. Depending on your goals and preferences, massage may include varying pressure and techniques.
Post-op lymphatic drainage requires an entirely different approach.
Healing tissue needs to be respected. Pressure is typically much lighter. Your therapist needs to understand the lymphatic system, the procedure you've had, where you are in recovery and how your body is responding that day.
That's why we don't treat every client—or every session—the same way.
Your body determines the session. Not a memorized routine.
The Wrthit Way™
Over the course of my career, I've developed an approach to bodywork that combines professional education, decades of hands-on experience, observation, intuition and one very important principle:
Pay attention to the person in front of you.
That philosophy became The Wrthit Way™.
Every Wrthit therapist comes to our team professionally trained. From there, I personally provide additional hands-on training and mentorship in The Wrthit Way™.
I'm not trying to turn our therapists into copies of me.
Quite the opposite.
I want them to bring their own education, experience, personality and strengths to the table—and then give them another layer of knowledge and mentorship they can draw from when caring for Wrthit clients.
The Wrthit Way™ is about learning to observe, think, listen and adapt.
Because no two bodies are identical.
And no two recoveries are identical either.
Meet the Wrthit Therapists
I'm incredibly proud of the therapists I've chosen to be part of Wrthit.
Our therapists are professionally trained and bring their own education, experience and strengths to our clients. They also receive additional hands-on training and mentorship from me in The Wrthit Way™.
When you book with a Wrthit therapist, you're not simply booking someone to perform a routine.
You're booking a professional who has been intentionally selected to represent the standard of care I've spent decades developing.
And as Founder, I remain involved in the philosophy, education and training behind the care we provide.
Want to Work With Me Personally?
I still love working hands-on with clients. I don't think that part of me is ever going away.
But my role at Wrthit is evolving.
As Founder, more of my time is now dedicated to training and mentoring our therapists, developing The Wrthit Way™, educating clients and continuing to raise the standard of care we provide.
For clients who specifically want to work with me, I maintain a limited number of Founder Sessions each week.
Founder Sessions allow me to bring more than 30 years of hands-on massage experience and my post-operative lymphatic training directly into your individualized session.

What Makes a Great Massage Therapist?
After more than three decades in this profession, my answer is very different than it would have been when I first started.
It's not one certification.
It's not one technique.
And it's definitely not simply the number of years printed on a résumé.
It's experience + education + empathy + curiosity + body knowledge + the willingness to keep learning.
That's what I believe makes an exceptional massage therapist.
It's what I continue to expect from myself.
And it's what I expect from every therapist who represents Wrthit.
Because whether you're coming to us because your shoulders desperately need a massage or because you're recovering from cosmetic surgery and need knowledgeable lymphatic care, you deserve a therapist who doesn't just go through the motions.
You deserve someone who listens.
Someone who thinks.
Someone who cares.
And someone who never stops learning.
