How Many Lymphatic Drainage Massage Sessions Do You Need After Cosmetic Surgery?
One of the most common questions we hear from clients planning cosmetic surgery is: How many lymphatic drainage massage sessions will I need after surgery?
The answer is different for everyone.
Some clients may need only a handful of sessions, while others benefit from lymphatic support over several weeks. The right number depends on your procedure, the amount of swelling you're experiencing, how your body is recovering, your surgeon's recommendations, and how your needs change throughout recovery.
That's why at Wrthit, we don't believe every post-surgery client should automatically receive the same number of lymphatic drainage sessions.
Why Is Lymphatic Drainage Used After Cosmetic Surgery?
Swelling and fluid buildup are a normal part of the body's response to surgery.
Procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL, mommy makeover, breast surgery, and facial procedures can temporarily affect how fluid moves through the treated areas.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) uses gentle, rhythmic movements to encourage natural lymphatic flow and support the body as it manages post-surgical swelling and fluid buildup.
Post-operative lymphatic drainage is not deep-tissue massage. Especially during early recovery, treatment should be gentle and appropriate for the procedure you've had and your stage of healing.
Your surgeon's post-operative instructions should always come first.
So, How Many Lymphatic Drainage Sessions Will You Need?
There isn't a universal number.
You may see recommendations online suggesting that everyone needs 5, 10, 12, or even 15 lymphatic drainage sessions after cosmetic surgery. Those numbers can be useful when planning your recovery, but they shouldn't be treated as a rule for every patient.
At Wrthit, we look at the individual rather than automatically assigning the same schedule to everyone.
Factors that may influence your treatment plan include:
The type of cosmetic surgery you had
How many areas were treated
The amount and location of swelling
Your stage of recovery
How your tissues are responding
Your comfort and mobility
Your surgeon's post-operative instructions
Whether multiple procedures were performed at the same time
Your needs can also change from one week to the next.
Lymphatic Drainage After Liposuction
Liposuction can involve one small area or multiple areas of the body, so recovery experiences vary considerably.
Someone who had limited liposuction may not have the same lymphatic needs as someone who had extensive liposuction involving the abdomen, flanks, back, arms, or thighs.
Instead of choosing a number of sessions based solely on the word “liposuction,” your treatment plan should take into account how much was done and how your body is actually recovering.
Lymphatic Drainage After a BBL
A Brazilian Butt Lift typically involves liposuction followed by fat transfer, which means your post-operative care needs to account for both the areas where fat was removed and the areas where it was transferred.
Your surgeon may also give you specific instructions regarding sitting, sleeping, compression garments, activity, and when lymphatic drainage can begin.
Because BBL procedures vary, there isn't one session schedule that's appropriate for every BBL patient.
Lymphatic Drainage After a Tummy Tuck or Mommy Makeover
Tummy tuck and mommy makeover recovery can be more complex because these surgeries may involve multiple procedures and larger treatment areas.
A mommy makeover, for example, may combine abdominal surgery, liposuction, and breast surgery.
That means the lymphatic care that's appropriate for one area of the body may be different from what's appropriate for another.
Your treatment should adapt to the procedures you've had and where you are in the healing process.
What About Facial Cosmetic Surgery?
Lymphatic drainage can also be used after certain facial and neck procedures when recommended by your surgeon.
The technique and treatment area are different from lymphatic drainage following body procedures.
Again, the appropriate number and frequency of sessions should be based on the specific procedure and your individual recovery rather than a predetermined package.
Why Your Treatment Schedule May Change
Your first few weeks of recovery don't necessarily look like the weeks that follow.
Swelling changes. Mobility changes. Tenderness changes. Your surgeon may adjust your instructions as you heal.
Your lymphatic care should be able to change with you.
At Wrthit, we continually consider how your body is responding rather than simply counting appointments.
That's part of The Wrthit Way™—our personalized approach to post-surgery lymphatic care.
When Should You Start Lymphatic Drainage After Surgery?
This is another question without one answer for every patient.
Many clients begin lymphatic drainage during the first week after surgery, but the appropriate timing depends on your procedure and your surgeon's recommendations.
Always ask your surgeon when they want you to begin.
If your surgeon recommends post-operative lymphatic drainage, it's a good idea to arrange your care before surgery. That way, you aren't trying to find a qualified therapist while you're already home recovering.
What If You Still Have Significant Swelling?
Swelling doesn't disappear on an identical timeline for everyone.
However, your lymphatic massage therapist should never diagnose a post-surgical complication.
If you experience new or worsening swelling, significant pain, redness, warmth, fever, drainage, shortness of breath, or anything else that concerns you during recovery, contact your surgeon or appropriate medical provider.
Lymphatic drainage should complement your surgeon-directed recovery plan—not replace medical evaluation.

Before surgery, we can discuss your procedure and help you plan your initial appointments. As you recover, your schedule can be adjusted based on your surgeon's guidance and how your body is responding.
