Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you are recovering from surgery, getting ready for a special event, or just desire a more sculpted, defined body, Brazillian Lymphatic Drainage will get you visible results in one session.
Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage is one of the most sought out techniques in the health and beauty industry. The results are immediate and can last for several weeks.
Why Brazilian Lymphatic Massage?
Although there are other styles of Manual Lymphatic Drainage that are effective, I have found that this technique gets my clients the best visible results. Not only is it completely painless, but it is also extremely soothing to the nervous system. Within the first week of surgery, many of my clients are afraid that having a lymphatic massage will be painful. Not only are they pleasantly surprised that it doesn’t hurt, but they also can’t believe how relaxed they feel.
How does it work?
Your lymphatic system lies just below the surface of the skin. It is a major component in the healing process as it helps to eliminate waste from the body. Unlike the cardiovascular system, it does not have its own pump. It relies on movement and deep breathing to circulate the fluid. Brazilian Lymphatic Massage clears the catchment sites and uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to encourage the movement of the fluid while focusing on areas where it can be “stuck”, especially following surgery. This allows for elimination of excess fluid, improves circulation, reduces inflammation, boosts the immune system, and promotes overall health and well-being. Although many clients come to me for the aesthetic results, I secretly love the health benefits they are receiving as a “side-effect”!
Is it safe after surgery?
Absolutely! Not only do my clients recover faster, but they also report less pain and discomfort throughout their healing process. It also helps to prevent fibrosis, works with the lymphatic system to eliminate waste, increases immune function, and visibly sculpts the body. I recommend at least 10 sessions for the best results. Although the word “drainage” can be deceiving, I never physically drain incision sites as a professional massage therapist. You can also check out my new book “Your Post Mommy Makeoever Survival Guide” where I guide you on how to have a conversation with your surgeon (they’re the boss!) and how to go about finding a professional therapist.
Do you use any tools or machines?
I personally do not. The only tools I use are my hands combined with knowledge, intuition, and almost 30 years of hands-on experience. This is one of the reasons I get such amazing results for the beautiful people I serve. I can feel which areas need more attention and adjust accordingly which is where tools and machines can fail us. This is also why this technique is completely painless, even after surgery. I make sure to pay attention to even the tiniest cues of discomfort to ensure you have the most soothing experience possible. Most of my clients end up falling asleep!
Does it hurt?
Not at all! This is probably one of the most common questions I get. You will be very sore and sensitive to touch after surgery, especially within the first week so it’s natural to think that any type of touch should be painful. My clients are always shocked that my technique doesn’t hurt, and it feels good. I also must say that if you have had a lymphatic massage in the past and it hurt, that is not lymphatic massage. It should never be painful, nor should you have any discomfort.
Do you actually drain incisions?
This is a common misconception, especially when we hear the word “drainage”. I never drain any incision sites. This is not only out of my scope of practice, it can also create more scar tissue, increase the chance of infection, and increase the length of your recovery time. Unfortunately, I hear stories all the time about this is still a common practice which comes from a lack of education. When we say “drainage”, it actually means encouraging the lymphatic f;uid to return to the cardiovascular system. It is then processed out of the through urination and defication.
For post-surgery, how far in advance should I book?
I recommend scheduling your post-op appointments as soon as you have your surgery date scheduled. We will want to work together to book your 10 sessions over a 3-4 week period for optimal results and a positive recovery experience. I always recommend communicating with your surgeon about your post-op plan so that we can integrate working together during your recovery period.
Do you travel to me or do you have an office?
The answer is yes! You can experience this technique in the comfort of your own home or in my adorable home studio. For post-surgery, I want to eliminate stress on your body as it is healing. Often the less traveling you have to do is better for your recovery. Mobile service is included in my pricing.
Does Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage help with autoimmune disorders?
Among the many benefits of this updated technique, I have seen beautiful results while working with my clients that have fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ect. This technique is extremely soothing and because it reduces swelling, my clients often report a decrease in their pain and discomfort immediately after their session. They are so relieved to finally find something that works with their body and decreases their inflammation especially when done on a regular basis.
